When there is a deficit of the vestibular system, via disease, injury or the ageing process, the brain can no longer rely on the inner ear for accurate information about movement. As such, a person’s ability to maintain posture or balance can be difficult. Dizziness, vertigo and nausea may also occur due to mismatched input from the eyes and ears to the brain.
Vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) teaches the brain to compensate for these error signals, thereby reducing symptoms of dizziness and vertigo, while also improving balance and gait. VRT includes manual therapy for conditions such as Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, but it also includes an individualized exercise program designed to alleviate a client’s specific symptoms.
